I wonder about it too. There must be something wrong with it becouse I suppose
they know about two free days before us (no net for many people).

You really think we would release a final version with more than 25 known
bugs? POV-Ray isn't Windows! ;-)

True, there probably weren't as many, but with all these complicated new
features, what exactly would you expect?

Did it go to 'g' as it was known as 3.1g?

POV-Ray v3.1 went through 6 public beta versions before final release.
Once it was released officially there were still some rather serious
bugs found and fixed. Each official release that has an upgrade is
assigned an alpha designator with the first official release build
designated with an "a". There were (I seem to recall) a couple of
revisions that did not even make it out to the public. For example
I think POV-Ray v3.1c was skipped and went straight to POV-Ray v3.1d
from v3.1b. POV-Ray v3.1g was the last official build released of
the v3.1 versions of the program. It is not unthinkable that even
after the official release of v3.5a that there will still be some
final revisions released afterwards to squash serious unwanted
bugs.

I personally prefer 50 betas and then get a high-quality product, than
5 betas and a buggy program.

But you know that 50 betas at the current frequency will take years until
the final release. I think some more beta versions don't hurt if this
improves the quality of the final product, but 50 is definitely beyond the
optimum IMO.
